Basically, this is how it works. You plant a seed. Normally, you should plant a seed in dirt. You know, something that has some nutrients, but more importantly, it will let water get to the seed, but still protect the seed from being washed away or being attacked by the harsh nature that is all around it above the ground. Alternatively, you could also plant it in a cup with a crumpled-up wet paper towel. That also works, but then you have to have the same protective force as the ground so that you can keep the cats away from it.
Once the seed has had enough time to drink enough water (science term - germinate), it will then break out of its shell and start to sprout roots and then the shoot tries to find its way up out of the dirt (or cup). The roots will grow and continue to get as much water as it can. It even grows little hairs that can reach in those tiny areas that the larger root can't. That's called team work. The shoot will start to grow leaves. Once those leaves are out of the ground, they no longer need the protection from the sun and other animals, but now depend on them to continue to grow.
Opposite to most competent life, plants breath in Carbon Dioxide (CO2). Meaning, the passing animals will exhale and the plants inhale that to produce oxygen for the animals to then breath in. The sun shines it rays down onto the leaves which, when mixed with the water that is gathered by the roots, allows the plant to continue to produce that oxygen, and in turn creates food for itself, which is a process called Photosynthesis.
And that's how plants grow.
